Mordred's Tale — Narrative Outline
Story arc, acts, and path to a complete first draft. Mordred's Tale is the dark origin of Magicborn; Mordred is the first.
Mordred's Tale — Narrative Outline
Draft Goal
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
goal | Complete first draft; polish deferred. Content first. |
thematic | Dark; origin of Magicborn; Mordred = first. The tale is about Mordred — by Act II it's all about him (and his time growing up); Jack/Morgana chapters support that. |
Length and pacing (targets)
| Field | Target | Note |
|---|---|---|
words per page | ~250–300 | Standard for paperback / manuscript; adjust if layout differs. |
pages per chapter | Flexible; scene-driven | e.g. 10–20 manuscript pages per chapter; let beats dictate. |
novel overall | ~80k–100k words | Fantasy “tale” / origin story; fix in draft or polish. |
Tone and audience
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
audience feel (most of the time) | Unsettled, morally implicated; hope and dread mixed. We want morally grey decisions, abrupt rash decisions, betrayal, submissiveness, resistance, greed, karma, scheming. No clean heroes; consequences land. |
themes in the text | Morally grey choices; rash action; betrayal; submissiveness vs resistance; greed; karma; scheming. |
Character names (Arthurian-style defaults)
Working names for drafting; swap if they clash with later canon.
| Role | Name | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Subordinate (Jack’s right-hand; Morgana’s second captor; half-sister’s biological father) | Owain | Arthurian knight line (Yvain / Owain); reads as competent follower, not a cartoon villain title. |
| Half-sister (Morgana + Owain; raised in Owain’s household) | Enid | From Arthuriana (e.g. Geraint’s wife): endurance under constraint; distinct from Morgana. |
| Daughter (Jack’s child; ~15 in Act III; fights beside Enid) | Gwyneth | Welsh/medieval feel; use Gwyneth in narration so “Gwen” doesn’t blur Guinevere if she appears. |
In docs and beats, Subordinate / half-sister / daughter still describe function; use Owain, Enid, Gwyneth in prose and dialogue.
Timeline (canon)
| Point | What |
|---|---|
| Jack's chapter = the past | Ch2 (Jack in the lair) happens before Morgana's current situation. Jack's story leads up to the events of Morgana's predicament. |
| Same Morgana | The woman sleeping in the lair during Jack's time is Morgana. She is there, asleep; Jack finds her, discovers she charges relics, uses her, and will build an empire on this secret. |
| Morgana's present | Ch1 (birth, escape) and Ch3 (council, imprisonment) are the "current" timeline. Morgana is at the council; magic is limited (gear exists, but not free-flowing). |
| Ch3 intercuts + re-alignment | In Ch3 we jump between: (1) Morgana’s present (where she’s taken) and (2) Jack’s timeline (still “not the same time” as Ch2). By the end of Act I (last beat of Ch3), Jack re-aligns into the present and they meet again. |
So: Jack (past) → finds sleeping Morgana, powers relics, leaves lair, builds empire on the secret; Morgana (present) escapes and is now at the council, with her world powered by Jack’s empire but magic not free-flowing yet. Ch3 intercuts both timelines and ends Act I with Jack in the present while Morgana is taken (and Mordred’s orphanage route is set for Act II). Any sibling events happen later, not at Mordred’s orphanage day.
Magic state
| State | When | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ch3 / Act I | Magic has not kicked back to free-flowing. People have magical gear (relics, charged items) but it’s not like the old days yet. | Leaning: Morgana is powerless without the child (when separated). |
| Jack's power source (Act I) | Jack powers everything with the sleeping Morgana; empire built on this secret. After she’s taken, he uses the half-sister (via touch) to charge relics. | |
| Free-flowing magic returns (half-sister ~14) | Jack discovers Merlin when the half-sister is still 14 (roughly when they first meet), deeper in the lair at the core of the tree. Merlin has been stopping the tree’s growth from within; he doesn’t know time has passed. When Jack opens that area, magic kick-starts globally, the tree grows again, and Jack’s empire is threatened; war and conflicts arise. Merlin thought it was “just an experiment.” |
Jack, half-sister, empire
| Beat | Content |
|---|---|
| Reveal | Jack is revealed to have been powering everything with the sleeping Morgana and to have built an empire around this secret. |
| Subordinate (Act I) | We meet Owain (working name: the subordinate) in Act I — Jack’s right-hand man; the man the empire will use with Morgana (same method as Jack in Ch2) to father Mordred’s half-sister (Enid). Morally grey compared to Jack; doesn’t always believe in Jack’s methods but does as he is told. |
| Half-sister (created later) | Empire uses Morgana again via Owain; Enid is born. She is raised by Owain’s family. She is not born yet when Mordred is in the orphanage. By the time of the castle meeting she is arranged to be married to a general in Jack’s army. |
| Power source until Merlin | After Morgana is taken, Jack maintains his power by using the half-sister (via touch) to charge relics — same as sleeping Morgana. When she is ~14 (around the time of the castle meeting), Jack discovers Merlin at the core; opening it kick-starts magic, the tree grows again, and magic fills the world. Jack’s empire is then threatened; war and conflicts arise. |
Act I — Foundation (Jack in the past, Morgana in the present)
| Chapter | Summary |
|---|---|
| Prologue | Set-up; world, stakes, or frame. |
| Ch1 — Morgana | Morgana gives birth (Mordred), escapes the lair, reaches toward the council. Done. |
| Ch2 — Jack | Past. Jack in Taro, sent into the lair to die; finds sleeping Morgana; discovers she charges relics; survives; plans to keep her and emerge with power. Done. This leads to his empire and to Morgana's current predicament. |
| Ch3 — Morgana Imprisoned | Intercut. Morgana’s present: she’s at/near the council while magic is gear-limited. Morgana is taken and Mordred’s route to an orphanage is set. Parallel: Jack’s timeline leads up to re-alignment. By end of Act I: Jack is back in the present and meets again. In progress. |
Finish Act I: Draft Ch3 so it ends with: (1) Morgana gets taken, (2) Mordred separated and routed to the orphanage on his first day (Midas-amulet setup), (3) Jack re-aligns into the present and they meet again. We meet the subordinate in Act I (the man who will father the half-sister with Morgana). That landing sets up Act II — Mordred’s and his half-sister’s lives. Half-sister is not born yet.
Act II — Their lives (Mordred + half-sister growing up)
| Focus | Content |
|---|---|
| Mordred in an orphanage | Act II starts with baby Mordred in an orphanage after Morgana is taken. Midas amulet scene (first day or early): harmless until he touches a man holding him — turns to gold. His “silent / hard-to-control” magicborn nature revealed. |
| Mordred’s growth | Act II tracks Mordred growing up: fear/avoidance, caretakers, instinctive conjuring (food/water), how Magicborn are treated. |
| Half-sister’s life | Intercut with Mordred: half-sister is born and raised by the Subordinate’s family. She is used (via touch) to charge relics for Jack. By the time of the castle meeting she is arranged to be married to a general in Jack’s army. |
| Castle meeting (key scene) | Initial meeting: Mordred 15, half-sister 14. Mordred has wandered into a hallway in Jack’s castle; she sees a boy that didn’t belong, along with her guards. Options for the beat: (a) conflict — she gets in trouble for Mordred’s doing, or (b) a small bit of dialogue between them before Mordred has to escape or just leaves. Pick one (or blend) when drafting. |
| End of Act II (act break) | Jack discovers Merlin at the core when the half-sister is still 14 — roughly around the time of (or just after) the castle meeting. Opening it kick-starts magic; the tree begins to grow again; magic fills the world. Jack’s empire is threatened; war and conflicts will arise. Merlin found = closing beat of Act II. |
To draft: Beat list for Act II — orphanage opener, Midas scene, Mordred’s growth; half-sister’s upbringing and her role as power source; the castle hallway meeting (15/14); then Jack finding Merlin at the end of Act II (half-sister ~14).
Act III — Fast-forward to the conflict; Mordred takes the throne
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
structure | Act III fast-forwards from the end of Act II (Merlin found, magic returned) to the conflict. We jump to when the southern war is underway. |
takeover | Mordred overtakes Jack and Jack’s empire easily and becomes the new king. This is the origin of Magicborn — Act III dives into how he does it. |
time | Mordred has traveled and grown older. He and Enid remeet — along with her 15-year-old daughter (Gwyneth) — in the conflict, on opposite sides. Act III reveal: Jack is Gwyneth’s father (Enid remains Owain’s child from Act I). |
battlefield remeet | Fierce battle between Mordred and his half-sister and her daughter on the battlefield of a southern conflict (Mordred with the neighboring nation / friends, reluctantly; she and daughter with Jack’s empire). |
constraints | Dark. Origin of Magicborn. Mordred = first. Pay off Act I and Act II; land the “first Magicborn” idea; Mordred becomes king. |
Act III — The battle (beats)
| Beat | Content |
|---|---|
| Fight with spells first | Half-sister assumes it’s better to fight Mordred using spells rather than the relics on her — because Mordred had better relics (“she assumed”). She is correct about the relics, but he also has overwhelming magical ability. |
| Mordred drops armor, casts | When he has a moment to breathe from her spells, he drops his armor and starts casting spells too. Onlookers watch as they cast similar spells but speak differently and the spells vary. |
| Half-sister’s reveal | To break through, the half-sister disrobes her top half to get rid of bark that was suppressing her magical ability. On reveal: scars all over her back and front torso like a whirlwind wrapped around her body. She uses the rings on her hand (as she had been), then starts speaking in a weird way; her fighting changes — fireballs and wind sickles come after Mordred. He uses his rings to deflect and maneuvers past the wind sickle. |
| Mordred’s scars | When Mordred reveals his torso he has more scars, more whirlwind scars all over — far more than his sister’s. |
| True power / tide turns | When Mordred shows his true power on the battlefield he turns the tide easily. Challengers come at him and his caravan here and there, but the majority of Jack’s army is destroyed by his final spells. He decimates their forces with ease and lets the neighboring kingdom continue its invasion. |
Act III — After the battle (escort + carriage)
| Beat | Content |
|---|---|
| Escort to Jack’s castle | The neighboring kingdom’s army (the side Mordred fought with) escorts Mordred to Jack’s castle, along with his half-sister. She has seen his power on the battlefield; he is basically escorted back as the victor. |
| Carriage scene | Mordred, Enid, and Gwyneth ride back together in a carriage; they talk on the way to the castle. |
| Half-sister’s hatred | Enid hates Jack, her father Owain, and everyone in the empire — she was used as a tool to power magical relics for the world (through Act II into Act III). Her hatred of Jack is sharpened once his paternity of Gwyneth is revealed. |
| Revelations to Mordred | She tells Mordred she became a military tool because she could wield magic relics stronger than the average person; she opens up more about herself and her daughter. In Act III it is revealed that Jack fathered the daughter (timing: carriage, castle approach, or another Act III beat — lock when drafting). |
Open / to fix in draft
| Item | Note |
|---|---|
| Time re-alignment mechanism in Ch3 | Decide the specific “how” that brings Jack into the present by end of Act I (last beat of Ch3) (time slip, core opening effect, or travel side-effect). |
| Morgana powerless without child | Leaning yes; lock in when drafting Ch3. |
| Split route (Act I end): Morgana + Mordred | Default: Morgana is taken; Mordred is separated and sent to an orphanage on his first day. Decide the exact separation event for drama + how the amulet gets into his hands. |
| Midas amulet rules | Decide how it interacts with “magic requires speech” vs Mordred being silent; it should still turn gold in the desired scene. |
| Half-sister timing + arrangement | Half-sister not born yet at orphanage start; empire creates her later via the subordinate (we meet subordinate in Act I). Decide forced/deal when drafting. |
| Castle meeting tone | Choose: (a) conflict — she gets in trouble for Mordred’s doing, or (b) brief dialogue then Mordred escapes/leaves. Or blend. |
| Act III daughter | Gwyneth (~15); Jack is her father — revealed in Act III. |
Optional / If time
| Item | Note |
|---|---|
| Prologue callback | If prologue has a frame (e.g. narrator, future Mordred), echo at the end. |
| Merlin’s voice | His “just an experiment” attitude can contrast with the world-changing consequence. |
| Length | Finish a complete draft; add or trim in polish. |
